The company was established in 1963, and has its headquarters in Glostrup near Copenhagen, Denmark, with subsidiaries in Europe, USA and Japan.

JAI has built it´s success on developing and manufacturing high quality, easy to use cameras, with a range of differentiating features. As an example, JAI was one of the first to use RS-232 control as a standard function, even for cameras based on standard video.

JAI's product line features both CCD and CMOS technologies, spatial resolutions from VGA to multi-megapixel, progressive scan and interlaced format, and sensitivity to light levels as low as .00001 lux. CCD camera technology is available for image detection in the visible, near infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) light spectrum including special 2-CCD and 3-CCD camera models.
